From the Kitchen Counter…

Home Design, Travel, Vintage, Antiques, Flea Markets, Home Renovation, Crockery and Dishes of any sort–writing, wandering and wondering…. I write about them all.

In the Name of Friendship…

Weather Today:  Blustery/Cold

Mood Reading:  ZZZZ’s  (actually over-slept this morning – needed 2 cups of coffee to get going!)

Last week my friend Elaine called wanting to know if I could accompany her on a little outing to pick up some fabric trim for a home project, a foot stool she was re-covering.  She wanted my “expert opinion” (which is, as we all know, the female code words for a play date) and wondered if I had time to ride along. What Would You Pay for Your Heart’s Desire?

Weather Today:  Raining Buckets (In the time it’s taken me to write this post, it has turned to snow and we now have about 2 inches!)

Mood Reading:  ZZZZ.5  (Got a great night’s sleep last night!)

Even though I slept great last night, I woke up to pouring rain and the disappointing realization that I’m NOT the world’s next g’zillionaire.

Two days ago, that wouldn’t have bothered me — that was before I, like millions of other Americans who shelled out over 1.5 BILLION dollars, caught the lottery fever and the chance at my very own pocket full of dreams. Read the rest of this entry »

Adolescents Fight To The Death Over Food (And other cheery menu ideas for that Happy Meal!)

Weather Today:  Sunny right now but threatening to change at any moment.

View ‘from the front porch: (At the mountain cabin–tryin’ to help Spring along here!)

Mood Reading:  ZZZZ’s (looove it when I get a good 8 hours in!)

A friend of ours from California, Steve Thomas, wrote my husband a note yesterday in which he mentioned my blog.  The hubby and the California Steve stay in touch regularly over their shared passion (read that obsession/fetish) – the pole vault. After reading of my “meanderings from the kitchen counter” which Steve has apparently been following via my Facebook link, he has offered some constructive advice regarding my novel.  Read the rest of this entry »

Rachel Ray vs. The New York Times? Pass the Delicately Seasoned Popcorn please!

Weather Today: Sunny, warming, slightly breezy (good day to get outside and dig in the dirt!)

View ‘from the front porch’:

Mood Reading: ZZZZ’s (slept in this morning – yum – but after a little caffeine and view of the sunshine, have an inexplicable urge to clean out the linen closet – perhaps spring has sprung after all!)

It was all over the morning shows this morning.  Not that I regularly watch them mind you, just this morning, ahem… to catch up on the news, and world events, and uh… stock market stats etc.  Anyway, I just happened to catch this story that apparently ran in the New York Times about celebrity chefs NOT writing their own cookbooks – using ghostwriters instead.  It was all over GMA and The Today show anyway. (Alright, so C-span isn’t part of my morning repertoire.) Read the rest of this entry »

Do You Want to Have Fun or Read? – 9 Bookclub Rules Worth Breaking!

(Stomach rumbled all night due to over-indulgence of corned beef and cabbage!)

Drove up to the cabin yesterday and upon arrival put on a big pot of St. Paddy’s day dinner and cracked open a bottle of our homemade Zinfandel.  Enjoyed second helpings of both, a roaring fire, and some decadent chocolate the hubby brought back from his most recent business trip – and then wondered why I couldn’t get to sleep. Sometime during the night the belly ache must have subsided and we woke up to a pretty, light snow falling this morning – welcome to spring in the Sierras!

This week a friend circulated a timely article to our bookclub entitled “9 Things Never to Say in BookClub”,  originally from the website of that Mother of all Read the rest of this entry »

Okay, I admit it – I’ve been in “creative avoidance” mode for almost a week now.  I’m not quite sure how I got here but it has definitely settled in.  I think it started when I sent the first 5 Chapters of the book back to my editor for her final review.  Read the rest of this entry »

Woke up feeling mighty perky this morning, considering… Our friend, vintner, and wine-maker extraordinaire John hosted a ‘barrel’ tasting yesterday afternoon at his “winery” just around the corner from our house. Several friends and enthusiasts (not a true connoisseur among us, but we know what we like) tasted his wines which  Read the rest of this entry »

ZZZ

Toss up this morning between blogging and making biscotti – decided to do both, I’ve mixed the batter and am letting it “rest” (recipe says 3 hrs in frig.), can tap away in the meantime!  Sent off  re-worked  chapters to editor yesterday (Chapters 1-5), so have a reprieve until she sends them back. Shop ’til You…Get Arrested?? (Part II)

I stomped around New York City in the pouring rain virtually all day.  Having discovered that Bergdorf Goodman was in fact a high-end department store and not a law firm, I satisfied my curiosity there and then set out to shop in earnest.  Of course along the way, I had to sample the NYC culture by stopping for another piece of cheese cake here, a double-mocha latte there, and several chocolate covered tid-bits along the way.  I had made my way to Macy’s to check out the truly remarkable moving holiday window displays, (or so I had convinced myself) and left a couple of hundred dollars later with a pair of very sexy black knee-high boots and a killer sweater.
