2 Days to go before Summit starts!

As per tradition, some members of the Summit staff (that would be the Chappell clan) retreated to “the mountain cabin” this past weekend prior to the Summit for some CIMG0934 10-01-52team building, strategic planning, and event overview.  This annual family sojourn is far from the calm, philosophical, zen-like intent of most similarly aimed “corporate retreats”, and usually winds up being a complete, intense total immersion in Summit logistics – (read that absolute bedlam.) CIMG1590

3 days to go before start of Summit:

Rock back  — swing — stiff pole — soft pole – run — yanked off the ground — grip tape — firm grip — pole wrap —  flex — flexing pole in the box – you’re under – you’re out —  pole drop — early plant — late plant – rhythm – position – timing — and after the penultimate…man she smoked it!

UnknownNo, this isn’t the opening paragraph or inventory list to Fifty Shades of Grey.  Still your beating heart, breathe in, take a sip of water and Welcome to Pole Vault Vocabulary Part II.  Read the rest of this entry »

From the National Pole Vault Summit – Daily Blog Installment 1.

Note to my faithful readers:  This space, From the Kitchen Counter, has been hijacked for the coming week and will be coming to you live as: “From the National Pole Vault Summit”.

Track & Field: National Pole Vault Summit

This is the time of year my two worlds collide.  My writer, gad-about, civilian, “normal” life (using that term loosely) meets my parallel universe – the whacky, intense, sometimes irrational, mostly obsessive/compulsive world and business which dominates the rest of my family (and their blackberries and iphones)  otherwise known as The Pole Vault.

imagesI will be posting live on the run-up to and during the entire Pole Vault Summit, depending of course on a variety of factors…namely how crazy things get, how much time I have, my mood and how much Chardonnay I’ve had the night before. Read the rest of this entry »

My Top Ten New Year’s Resolutions (and why I won’t be keeping them.)

Mood Reading: ZZZ’s (stayed up to watch season opener of Downton Abbey, took me a while to remove my jewels and tiara.)

Every publication I’ve picked up in the last 2 weeks has suggested appropriate New Year’s Resolutions, depending on who’s paying the advertising.  I thought I’d share mine along with the reasons I probably won’t be keeping them.  After all, we’re already a week in and I’ve broken most of them starting with: Read the rest of this entry »

I thought I would try a little something different with this year end post, just click on the link here for my video blog:

Here’s to a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!

What We All Want This Christmas…

Mood Reading: ZZZ’s (slept okay considering temps that have dipped into the low teens!)

This has been one of the more difficult blog posts for me to write.  It shouldn’t be… it’s that time of year where everywhere you go people are cheery, carols are playing, there’s usually some chocolate to be had and the air is filled with good will and happy tidings.

But everything changed last Friday. Read the rest of this entry »

Any “Port” in the Storm…preferably with a hint of chocolate essence and a silky smooth finish!

Mood Reading: ZZZ’s (would have been more Z’s but kept waking up to see if power came back on.)

So, after a wonderful week in Charlotte N.C. visiting the offspring (who opened their home and hearts to us for a fabulous Thanksgiving holiday) I am trying to recover from the week of over-indulgence by a trip to the cabin and some (ahem) healthy eating and exercise.  I drove the 2 hours it takes yesterday and made it as far as the little country store in town before Read the rest of this entry »

Can’t Buy Me Love…(but maybe my vote for $5.8 Billion)

Mood Reading: ZZZZ’s  (sleeping well in the quiet following election hysteria)

So… did you ever think there would come a day when we actually welcomed the return of erectile dysfunction ads and a nerdy guy hawking roll-over mobile minutes into our prime time living rooms?   That day arrived this past Wednesday, a day after the most expensive presidential election in history, and none too soon I say!  Between the barrage of nasty, high volumned political ads, robo-calls, door knockers, mail propaganda, and pollsters calling at all hours of the day and night, it’s a wonder anyone with half an already decided brain didn’t go stark raving crazy! God and a Super PAC Make Pretty Cozy Bedfellows This Election Season!

View from the Front Porch:

Mood Reading:  ZZZ’s (howling wind last night – someone needs to tell Mother Nature that Winter is bullying our newly arrived Autumn!)

Thus far in my illustrious career as a blogger, I have tried to remain non-political on this page as not to offend my so-called “reading demographic”, god forbid.  (Notice I did not say apolitical.  I am not apolitical, but I can be non-political for short bursts of time, mostly when I’ve had a sedative along with that second glass of Sauvignon Blanc.) So… against my intuitive tendencies, I have tried to find myriad subjects to write about that don’t involve the upcoming presidential election.  This has been only marginally successful — and so categorically against my nature that I find I am not only tongue tied when trying to avoid the subject, but can simply no longer contain myself.  Read the rest of this entry »

When You Have to Live Life to Write About It!

Mood Reading: ZZZ’s  (Had to fight the dog for pillow space last night!)

I’ve been hearing the same question from a lot of quarters lately (and no, it doesn’t involve politics):  “So…what’s going on with your book?” Read the rest of this entry »
